Toxic Release Inventory

The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program was authorized by the Community Right to Know Act of 1986. The intent of the program is to give the public information about 660 hazardous compounds being used, manufactured, processed, released or disposed of by local industries. States collect this data on an annual basis. In 1998, the EPA added a class of compounds called acid aerosols, which are emitted by electric generating utilities.
