Educator Workshops

Any school or university within Hamilton County may request a free workshop to further the education of their teachers or pre-service teachers with a focus on preventing waste. Each workshop is geared toward Ohio's New Learning Standards with a focus on science. Workshops take place at the requesting school at no charge; a minimum of 12 participants is required. Vermicomposting (Worm Bin) Workshop!

Teachers will learn the essentials of vermicomposting using red worms and microorganisms to break down organic matter. Each school will receive a copy of Mary Applehof's book Worms Eat My Garbage. Interested teachers may purchase a bin and a pound of red worms for $20 (a value of $50). Worms will be shipped after the workshop. Your students can bury many types of food scraps and harvest vermicompost in three to four months all while partaking in Ohio's Cognitive Demands for Science.

School Recycling Workshops

Hamilton County R3Source will provide your school staff with an introductory workshop on recycling at home and at school. The workshop will focus on what can be recycled locally, and how to implement a successful and sustainable school recycling program. The workshop will also focus on local resources and available curriculums that will enhance your teaching of environmental science and solid waste management subject matter.

Project Learning Tree Workshops

Project Learning Tree (PLT) is a comprehensive environmental education program that helps students develop skills in creative problem solving, critical thinking, evaluation, research, and decision making. PLT helps educators with balanced, non-biased learning experiences so students learn how to think, not what to think, about our complex environment. Educators who participate in a PLT workshop receive a ready-to-use guide that actively involves students in the learning process. The activities in the guide are also correlated to the common core standards.
